Mel’s Diner says to guests, ‘Yes we can’

Mel's DinerThe popular southwest Florida comfort-food chain starts a new campaign aimed at reminding employees – and guests – about the importance of customer service.

Bonita Springs, Fla. – Mel’s Diner, affectionately known as “Southwest Florida’s kitchen,” has always ensured that each of its locations conveys that same sense of family friendly service, high value and quality, made-from-scratch comfort foods that made its original store such a success.

In an attempt to maintain and exceed its already high standards of hospitality, the company has started a new “Yes We Can” campaign, which aims to remind employees – and diners – that Mel’s always puts its customers first.

“It occurred to me that sometimes, because we are all busy, we don’t take the time to do what’s right or find the opportunities to say ‘Yes,’” said Ralph Desiano, chief operating officer for Mel’s Diner.

“The hospitality industry is our chosen field and we need to be hospitable. When we find a reason to say ‘yes,’ we impact our guests’ experiences and lives in a positive fashion. Exceeding their expectations is our job.”

To ensure full support of the initiative, the company will ask all its employees (both in its restaurants and corporate offices) to don special “Yes We Can” buttons.  All Mel’s locations will also put up posters, which will better convey the program’s promise to clients.

“The ‘Yes We Can’ promotion is also about a ‘can do’ attitude and striving to be the best. It shows a passion to get better and better everyday, a goal to overcome any and all obstacles,” said Desiano.

“Happier guests mean more frequent visitors and higher tips.  So why would we ever say ‘No?’  I don’t think our guests have ever asked us for anything that was impossible.  The ‘Yes we can’ program is just a reminder of the attitude and state of mind we should maintain when dealing with our guests.”

Currently, Mel’s Diner owns and operations 10 locations throughout southwest Florida and plans to open four more stores by 2007, including new spots in Cape Coral, Naples and two in Sarasota.  As part of its recent brand revamping, which will come into fruition in 2006, the company recently added a number of new gourmet dishes to its comfort food-filled menu.
