Cancun restaurants recover from Wilma faster than expected
In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Wilma, Grupo Anderson’s,
Mexico’s largest restaurant group, expected to feel the storm’s effects
for at least six months. However, the recovery process has taken
much less time than expected, and most of the restaurants are on track
to reopen before the year’s end.
Cancun, Q. Roo, Mexico – Grupo Anderson’s, parent company of
world-famous restaurant brands, Señor Frog’s and Carlos ‘n Charlie’s,
originally thought that Hurricane Wilma had devastated the majority of
its restaurants in Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. Now, in
the midst of recovery, the group is optimistic that the majority of the
restaurants will be operable by mid-December.
“The overall damages are not as bad as they appeared at first,” said
Jorge Hinojosa, VP of development for Cancun-based Grupo
Anderson’s. “Even El Shrimp Bucket, which we thought was
destroyed beyond repair, is expected to reopen within the next few
months.”
Both the Señor Frog’s and Carlos ‘n Charlie’s in Cozumel will reopen by
the end of November, and those in Cancun will be open by early
December. The Carlos ‘n Charlie’s in Playa del Carmen was only
closed for two days, and the Señor Frog’s, which experienced minor
damage, will open within the next two months.
Restaurants located in the La Isla Shopping Village, Come ‘n Eat and
Glazz Restaurant & Ultra Lounge, did not suffer significant damage
and are ready to open as soon as the complex is completely
repaired. The remaining restaurants, Mama Roma, El Tumbaburros
and So Good, are located in the downtown area of Cancun and are already
open, but with limited hours until the city’s public transportation
system is running a full schedule.
“According to authorities, eighty percent of the city [Cancun] and
16,000 hotel rooms will be back up and running by December 15, so
travelers should not be discouraged to visit these areas over the
holidays,” said Hinojosa. “We still have some work to do, but
things are quickly getting back to normal. Most areas have
phones, gas, electricity and water, and it is perfectly safe to drive
on main roadways.”
Through the recovery process, Grupo Anderson’s has remained loyal to
its employees. “Not a single employee has been dismissed,” said
Hinojosa. “They have all continued to work and receive paychecks
through this, and I don’t believe we would have been able to recover
this quickly without their help and dedication.”
