Bonita Sprigs, Fla. – Mel’s Diner has been affectionately known as “Southwest Florida’s kitchen” since opening in 1989.
But really, how popular and well-loved are the company’s restaurants in that area?
You need only to ask the readers of the Southwest Florida News-Press (www.news-press.com) to find out.
In a recent Readers’ Choice Poll by the newspaper, readers lavished
Mel’s Diner with seven (7) awards, including the coveted “Best All
Around Restaurant”.
No small feat, considering the number of quality eateries in the area.
In addition, Mel’s Diner was also selected as the area’s “Best Family
Restaurant,” “Best Place for Breakfast,” and “Best Salad.” It earned
“runner-up” status for “Best BBQ,” “Best Place for Lunch” and “Best
Hamburger.”
If that weren’t enough, Mel’s sister business, Big Al’s Sports Grill in
Bonita Springs, won six (6) awards in the poll, including “Best Sports
Bar,” “Best Bar/Lounge,” “Best Happy Hour” and “Best Pizza.” Big Al’s
earned “runner-up” status in the categories of “Best Chicken Wings” and
“Best Family Restaurant” (second only to Mel’s Diner itself in the
latter).
Founded by Chris Karakosta in San Carlos, FL, the Mel’s Diner
originally set out to mimic the look and feel of Karakosta’s first
eatery, the Chicago-based family style diner, Dimitri’s. Before Mel’s,
Karakosta owned and operated two other establishments in Southwest
Florida, the upscale steak-and-seafood spot, The Green Onion, and
Stevie Tomato’s Sports Page, one of the area’s first sports bars.
Currently, the chain boasts 10 locations throughout southwest Florida
and plans to add four more stores by 2007, including spots in Naples,
Cape Coral and Sarasota. While its reach may be widespread, each store
continues to pride itself on the family friendly service, high value
and made-from-scratch comfort foods that made the original location
such a success.
