Mexico’s hot spot invades the States

Senor Frog'sMexico’s hot spot invades the States with a menu full of surprises

Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico – Señor Frog’s, famous from Cancun to the Bahamas for bars brimming with “yards” of exotic libations, has officially entered the U.S. with new watering holes and restaurants, the first of which opened in Myrtle Beach in June.  The second and third locations are planned for Honolulu and Las Vegas in 2006.

Not only is the mischievous reptilian about to flood the United States with his Mexican mayhem, but he’s celebrating his American openings with a brand new menu adorned with authentic Mexican twists and turns.

"The creation of the new menu was like doing the Mambo,” said Jorge Hinojosa, director of development for Cancun-based Grupo Anderson’s.  “We took two steps back, narrowing it down to our popular items; two steps to the right by adding a "twist" to some of the items; and two steps to the left with new touches to create something completely unique.”

Entirely new and never before seen in America are Aqua Tacos -- lettuce wraps filled with cactus salad and chunks of chicken, topped with a green tomatillo sauce and guacamole.  A bird of a different feather entirely are Chicken Wings – traditional chicken wings capable of flying high as an eagle raised on chipotle bleu cheese dressing – and watch out for the one that “tries to put up a fight”.

A touch of something different spices up almost every dish.  Cilantro pesto tops the traditional cheeses in the Quesadillas, and Jalapeno Poppers are served with papaya ketchup.  Chipotle garlic mayo is on the zesty side of Pan Seared Crab Cakes.

Of course, tortillas are there in many forms, even as Tortilla “No Chicken” Soup and as a crazy Mexican “Fettuccini” in a cilantro cream sauce.  After being marinated in chili sauce, “Te Killa” Grilled Shrimp are to die for, while Roasted Chicken is first marinated in lime juice just to be different, and the Pan-Seared Mahi filet is crusted with plantain flakes.

Call it American barbecue or Mexican barbacoa, but ribs and chicken in Caramba! Chipotle BBQ sauce get a special tang you just won’t find at home.  Señor Frog’s Po’ Boy is Po’ Juan, served as chipotle mayo tossed seafood on a toasted baguette, and his Philly Steak takes on some extra spice and becomes a south of the border Beef Chapata.

If some things are better left alone, it’s certainly not his Grilled T-Bone served with chorizo potato purée, mixed vegetables and homemade tequila mushroom sauce.  And in a raucous place like Señor Frogs, the only thing silent are the Soft Tacos, with beef or chicken, but without the crunch.

Folks who know and love Señor Frog’s for its spontaneous and interactive entertainment and unique line of clothing will still find it.  But the fun and festivities will have to move over for the food as Señor Frog sets out to conquer America.
