From the classroom to the kitchen

Children will join busy moms in innovative meal assembly movement

Tampa, FL – Spending time in the kitchen used to be a chore for moms until Marni Poe and Melissa Slack opened a business that eliminated the drudgery of menu planning, shopping, prep-work and cleanup by moving the dinner assembly process out of home kitchens and into specially-equipped retail outlets.

Now Poe and Slack, founders of Let’s Eat!, are turning a new demographic onto the popular meal assembly movement.

When children leave their classrooms behind for summer vacation, you’ll find many in Poe and Slack’s commercial kitchens – stirring, mixing, measuring and assembling meals for their families.

Kids are invited to make their own meals at various Let’s Eat! stores in the Tampa area during a weekly “Kids in the Kitchen” event which kicks off Wednesday, June 7.

Throughout the months of June and July, children are encouraged to visit Let’s Eat! meal assembly shops to create up to two meals from the 14-item menu which changes monthly. Each entrée costs $19 and serves four to six people.

The event is offered each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following Let’s Eat! locations:

Let’s Eat! South Tampa
3401d W Bay To Bay Blvd
Tampa, FL 33629
Phone: (813) 805-0555

Let’s Eat! Citrus Park
11965 Sheldon Road
Tampa, FL 33626.
Phone: (813) 792-2035

Let’s Eat! Fishhawk
16132 Churchview Dr. Suite 105
Suite 105
Lithia, FL 33547
Phone: (813) 685-7111

Let’s Eat! St. Petersburg, located on 4946 4th Street North, will offer “Kids in the Kitchen” sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. The phone number is (727) 520-1470.

No appointment is necessary, and there is no age requirement, but children must be tall enough to reach the counter and must be accompanied by an adult. Children will receive a free cookie or brownie for participating.

The activity is ideal for children because each Let’s Eat! food preparation station is equipped with an easy-to-follow recipe and all the utensils, accessories and ingredients needed to assemble meals, Poe said.
There are no sharp knives or hot ovens to endanger children because all ingredients are chopped and diced by Let’s Eat! staff and entrées are designed to be cooked at home.

Getting children involved in the kitchen is also a great way to motivate fussy eaters, according to Poe and Slack’s customers.

“I've had moms tell me that when the kids come with them and help fix meals, they are more likely to eat it,” Poe said. “So they end up eating healthy meals and trying something new.”
