Following the devastation of Hurricane Wilma, many predicted that
Cancun’s recovery process could take up to nine months; but the quick
reopening of Carlos ‘n Charlie’s is proof that the area is back on its
feet.
Cancun, Q. Roo, Mexico – Carlos ‘n Charlie are rested, recuperated and
ready to party. In fact, Cancun’s immensely popular Carlos ‘n
Charlie’s restaurant is not only up and running again, but it’s back
and better than ever.
Owned and operated by Cancun-based Grupo Anderson’s, Mexico’s largest
restaurant company, Carlos ‘n Charlie’s re-opened Jan. 20, following
repairs to damage caused by Hurricane Wilma. The powerful category 4
storm slammed into Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula three months ago,
wreaking havoc on this tourist-dependent region.
About 80 percent of Cancun’s hotels and restaurants were damaged by the storm and as a result have been closed for repairs.
Grupo Anderson’s restaurants, known for their lively
south-of-the-border atmospheres, are especially popular with
tourists. Happily, they are being restored more quickly than
first anticipated.
“We have all worked very hard to quickly recover from the damages of
the storm,” said Jorge Hinojosa, vice president of development for
Grupo Anderson’s. “Our livelihood depends on bringing tourists
here during the busy season, so we had no choice but to get our
restaurants back up and running as quickly as possible.”
Carlos ‘n Charlie’s in Playa del Carmen reopened in November and the
Cozumel location was back in business by the end of December.
Señor Frog’s, another of Grupo Anderson’s World Famoso restaurant
concepts, is set to reopen its Cancun and Playa del Carmen locations by
the end of February.
Luckily, Wilma did little damage to Grupo Anderson’s Glazz Restaurant
& Ultra Lounge, or to Come n’ Eat, which are both located in the
Plaza La Isla shopping village. However, both remain closed until
the entire center is ready to reopen, which is expected to be in March.
Flights in and out of Cancun are operating normally, and water,
electricity and phone service are working in every establishment.
In fact, the locals are optimistic about the return of tourists and
good times to Mexico now that so many of the hotels, restaurants and
attractions have reopened.
